Full Auto Review
Are you ready to blow things up? Want to destruct everything in your path as you rage on to the checkered flag? Full Auto may just be the game for you.

by: Dakota Grabowski
February 27, 2006

Full Auto was originally dated to be at the launch of the Xbox 360 in November. It was one of the first games to be shown for the system back when Microsoft execs were readying the E3 unveiling. Now three months after it was originally delayed, does it provide gamers another alternative for their racing needs?

Full Auto isn’t the only game left that was delayed from launch to make it’s way finally to the 360. Dead or Alive 4 was delayed a month for final polishing and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is almost upon its release date too. The Outfit and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion both will be released next month so the launch games that were delayed are almost all here. The only ones missing are Saint’s Row and Test Drive: Unlimited in the summer, though I may have missed a few others. The meaning of the delay of Full Auto was said to be for financial reasons. The developers didn’t want to compete head to head against Project Gotham Racing 3, Need For Speed: Most Wanted and even Ridge Racer 6. That would make for a crowded launch line-up for four racing games with sharing sales. Moving away from PGR3 is a smart move that’s for sure but does their extra three months equate to a better game? I am not so sure about that.

Intense actin at all fronts are promised around every corner.

For those who have played the demo, throw those impressions out the window for now. That demo was from mid-August and was used only to generate hype for the release. The demo most likely has deterred many away from purchasing Full Auto so it’s best to rid those impressions out of your memories. Full Auto has been touched up enough to see the difference between the demo and the full retail game.

If you haven’t played the demo, great! You’ll be happy to know that the game turned out to be decent but not the next-generation leap you may have come to expect with your Xbox 360 games. Full Auto presents gamers with complete destruction of the environment and your vehicles as you race to the finish line. Interesting enough? Probably not since adding guns to your cars doesn’t immediately mean creative. How about the ability to grab your watch and reverse time to change the outcome of the race? That should grab your attention! Reversing time (thank your Ubi-Soft for the PoP series) has become a new trend that games are jumping on board to include in their games. Artoon did it with Blinx and many upcoming games hope to include the same features of rewinding time. Think of this as the new “Matrix-effect”. Full Auto throws in some unique features but it may not be enough to capture your attention for more than a few hours.

The career mode doesn’t mix in a story to keep you on your toes as you race. There aren’t any rivalries with other racers or any purpose of racing to finish first. The career mode is lacking and need some heavy intimate time invested into it to make it more appealing. The developers may have played it safe since I’d actually rather waste my time chasing down cars online than offline. For those without Xbox Live (not sure why wouldn’t want Microsoft’s flagship online services), I’d recommend you think twice about buying Full Auto since offline, it isn’t the best choice for you right now.

The head-to-head mode is more entertaining than the career mode. Not only are you playing against a friend, but it gives the game that much more meaning to finish first. No way would I want to lose to anyone and to have a friend for some competition is much more satisfying than the dumb A.I. in Full Auto. The A.I. isn’t totally incoherent but it just doesn’t feel the same to destruct their car as it does to do so to a friend. You’ll want to unlock everything before inviting a friend over to play though; they just may end up leaving unimpressed if you have them play right away. The Arcade mode is nothing to take note over either. It’s straight up arcade action for quick races. Nothing exhilarating that’s for sure.
