Project Gotham Racing 3 Review
We review Microsoft and Bizarre Creation’s premiere racing title that is all about style, speed, competition, a solid presentation, and jaw-dropping visuals. The next generation of gaming truly starts right here.

I thought Project Gotham Racing on the Xbox was a pretty good launch title that had the great Kudos concept in it, but it didn’t really impress me all that much. Project Gotham Racing 2 when it came out two years later was pretty good, and I liked it. They introduced a great online mode, and made the game more intuitive for players. As for Project Gotham Racing 3, I simply love this game. Everything about it oozes style, substance, great visuals, fantastic sound, great modes, even better multiplayer options, and a new track editor are just some of the reasons why this might be the Xbox 360 game to own.

With Project Gotham Racing 3, you have a lot less than you did in PGR2, but what you have is simply fantastic. When it comes to vehicles, the developers have opted to stop taking the Gran Turismo route, and have a bunch of really nice cars in a sea of cars you could care less about, stopped with the car specific races, and now for the most part you only have super cars. Right when you start out you can get a really nice car. There are some high quality manufactures in there also. There is Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Aston-Martin, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maserati, Zonda, Saleen, and more. Even the not so exotic manufactures in the game like Nissan, Ford, Toyota, and so forth have some pretty nice cars in here. In total there are a little fewer than 100 vehicles in the game. The Enzo Ferrari, while a fantastic car, is no longer one of the top best; in fact you can buy it fairly early on in the game. How about the McLaren F1LM, or the Palmer Sport JP1? The Ferrari F50 is a pretty good car as well, all of these cars which are in the Class A. The Enzo believe it or not, finds itself in Class B now. There are only five areas in the game this time around, with Tokyo, Las Vegas, New York, London, and Nurburgring. Despite there only being those, they are very well detailed, have a lot of variety, and different variations for each race.

Ferrari F50 anyone?

The classes in the game don’t really pertain to the single player portion of the game other than the fact that, the computer will match up cars that can actually compete against that car when you use it. You aren’t going to have a Class E car and race against Class A. You can easily and quickly buy any of these cars, such as my favorite, the McLaren F1LM in the game’s Gotham Career after earning some credits for each race. In Gotham Career you have four different things you can do, the first of which is the meat of the single player game, Solo Career. Here you have Style Cups, Championships, World Tours, Series, Time Trials, Tournaments and more. Each one of these events is split up into a few small sections. In the beginning there are a few sections, and after earning a medal for each you get a trophy and unlock a new event. As you progress, there are more and more sections for each event, the tracks become more complicated, the challenges you must perform, and the areas. You can choose to do Novice (a steel medal), Easy (bronze), Medium (silver), Hard (gold), or Hardcore (platinum). Most people will probably do Medium, and as long as you have a majority of a kind of medal, you will receive a trophy of that same color.

Besides the racing in PGR3, another big part, is racing with style, and with style comes Kudos. The Kudos are points received when you make a turn around a curve by breaking, or passing cars, drafting cars, going past cars, drifts or a number of these achievements and others linked together to form bigger combo numbers. Interestingly enough, it seems as if though there is a better balance between speed, style, and getting Kudos than in the past PGR games, whereas it seemed like they wanted you to earn more Kudos, this one is more leant on that, and lets you have a much better sense of speed, while at the same time keeping the style there. If anything, the Kudos in the career serve to bump your place up in the online rankings, than anything else, coupled with the medal, you earned, or sometimes the time it took you to complete the event. The Kudos system itself is just an overall part of the game’s interface now, and no longer is all these numbers and crap flying all over the screen distracting you from what is actually happening while you are playing. The overall system is much more forgiving also, and gives you more time to connect combos, even if it is only just a second or two more. Also, slightly bumping into sides of barriers won’t really damage your Kudos that bad this time around either.
